This week we will see the film Obedience. The film is based on experiments carried out by Stanley Milgram
Write a brief response to the film, focusing on the RESEARCH ethics issues raised by the experiments shown. Use your readings in Babbie and on the web (some sources are linked under web resources for this week) and your class notes to help you to understand these issues and to provide you with a basic vocabulary for discussing them. These sources will also help with any details about Milgram or the experiment that you might need.
You may also want to respond to other aspects of the film, such as whether the research techniques really get at what the researchers are trying to measure. Can you think of any alternative approaches to the research question? You might also want to give a personal response to the film. How do you think the various participants may have felt? Was the film disturbing to watch?
When you are writing your piece, organize it as an essay. That is, make sure you start with an introductory paragraph and end with a conclusion. These should give an overview of your responses. Make sure that each paragraph focuses on a single issue and has a clear topic sentence. Avoid one and two sentence paragraphs. Yes, spelling and grammar do matter. Note the correct spelling of Stanley Milgram.
Make sure to make the primary focus of your essay the research ethics issues and not the ethics of the subjects of the experiment (the "teachers"). Papers which do not do this will be returned for revision.
If you miss the showing of the film discuss alternative arrangements for this assignments with the instructor.
