Goals:

Understand the concept of voluntary informed consent.

Be able to identify at least 3 ways in which coercion may occur in social research.

Be able to explain the concept of harm as used in social science research.

Be familiar with the institutional review process

Be able to discuss the ethical issues raised by a research project.

Understand the distinction between confidentiality and anonymity.

Be able to explain why research on children, students, inmates and patients is subject to special scrutiny.

Be able to discuss the role of deception in social research.

Be able to summarize and analyze the major issues raised by Obedience.
